Hey Guys,

On Tuesday 29th November we are holding an EGM and are looking for some cool people to join our vibrant society. Due to the success of the society, and the workload of some committee members, we are looking to expand. We have roles in PRO - both a social media PRO along with a poster PRO (training WILL be provided).
Due to some restructuring in the committee we are also looking for a secretary.
This is a great opportunity to get involved in a society that is already on its feet and running successfully. It is this type of involvement that changes the college experience (for the better), while also getting your CV to the top of the pile when it comes to the big bad real world in a year or few!
So have a think about it, if you have any questions please ask one of the existing committee members, we are all tagged in the poster. There is no question too big or small, if one of us can't answer we'll pass it along to the person who can. Come join our team, we'd love to have you on board :) MU Geog Soc.

The Geography Society were delighted to help welcome some TY students to the Geography Department on Tuesday this week as part of Geoweek. Geoweek is an annual week dedicated to an element of geography which changes every year. This year the focus was on 'The power of the park'.
The students had a talk from Dr. Kevin Keegan on the local parks, their history and significance. We talked to them about our involvement in last year's happy campus, and the importance of finding a good space for mental health and well being. Neasa Hogan of the Geography Department talked to them about the Roque Maps, which are on display in Rhetoric House and are seriously impressive (check them out). Then they went for a walk to explore the grounds of the campus.
If you haven't done this yourself, please do. We are so lucky to have such green space on campus, many colleges and universities in Ireland don't have what we have.
Perfect way to take a break from all the study :)
All the best,
Geog Soc.

Hey folks,
FILM SCREENING: this week in the land of all things geography we have the amazing Joe Lee appearing in the third year's City In Film class, to honour that we are showing two of his award winning documentaries on Tuesday night, 6pm TH1 in the Arts building.
MILIEU! (bless you, I hear you say) ;) Milieu is the geography journal made by students and staff for all. We are looking for your submissions! 1000 word (approx.) pieces that are in some way geography related (remember, geography is the intersection of humans and places so that literally leaves it open to ANYTHING!!). If you have some work that you are happy with and its close to 1000 words (we are aware that a lot of assignments come in the 1500 word category so no worries if you can't cut it down), then please submit it to us. We will happily take in photo submissions also. If you have been to some place with your club / society / class / family and you thought it was particularly beautiful, and geographical, then why not send them in? The journal will be published in spring 2017. Anything that gets published in Milieu is considered a proper publication, so if you are looking to go further in your academic career this is one step forward.
So what else is going on in the world of geography? Well...
FOE IRELAND: Friends of the Earth Ireland are asking people to email their TDs asking them to meet in Buswell's hotel to discuss climate action. It takes about 2mins to email your TDs (they have it all set up nice and neat), and then you pick an hour slot to go meet your TDs on Tuesday. Friends of the Earth can fill you in on what to say if you want to take action but are nervous about what to say.
GEOG SEMINAR: The geography department have yet another interesting seminar on Thursday 4-5.30pm in Roque Lab: Benjamin Thebaudeau, Postdoctoral Researcher in the Irish Climate Analysis and Research Unit, Maynooth University. Talk title: “Mapping the Porcupine Bank and reconstructing its past.”
BAKE SALE: We plan on holding a fundraising bake sale next week so if you fancy yourself as a budding Mary Berry or Paul Hollywood, why not bake up a few goodies and help raise some worthy funds for St. Raphael's School in Celbridge. Bake sale takes place on 23rd Nov.
BOUNCEATHON: Plus, trampoline soc are having an amazing bounceathon on Tuesday 15th, if you fancy representing Geog soc and bounce the night away, or a little while anyway, please get in touch! Or just pop down to the event and tell the guys you'd like to bounce for geography!
SAFETALK: Safetalk is happening again this week, this is an amazing half day course that skills you up on practicalities of dealing with a situation where somebody feels suicidal, sounds heavy, but I promise, it is really good, hugely important and very practical. If you want to get involved please contact MHS or Karen in the Welfare Office in the SU.
Keep it real folks and have a gneiss day :)

Whale hello Geography Fans!
Welcome back to the final half of the first semester. You are officially ¼ of the way through your academic year, well done you :)
And remember, it’s GUST week on campus this week so if you haven’t ‘Gotten Ur Stuff Together’ yet there’s still time!
We have a few things planned to help ease you in to things…
We will be joining Chris in the pastoral care hour to talk to people about what we do in the society, if that’s not enough to make you break down the Student Services Door at 1pm (it’s in an Tobar in Student Services from 1-2pm), then perhaps the free tea, coffee and refreshments can convince you. Come along, I promise we’ll have fun :)
On Wednesday evening, we are screening The Hours at 6pm in TH1 in the Arts Block. This will be particularly beneficial to anyone doing GY339 as it is the film focussed on this week but we’d love to see as many of your friendly faces as possible thereJ Bring your mates and relax, everyone welcome along. This is a freebie event as well, perfect for midweek ;)
Plus, if you’re into eskers (who isn’t?!), then the Geography Department, as part of their seminar series have a talk on in Rocque Lab on Thursday at 4-5.30pm. Cathy Delaney, Senior Lecturer in the Division of Geography & Environmental Management from Manchester Metropolitan University will be talking on: “What do eskers tell us about ice sheets?”
So that’s all for this week folks, we hope to see you at some of the events :)
Geography Society.
