Maths & Physics FAQs
Do I need to be into Maths *and* physics to join?
No, anyone who is into either Maths or Physics is welcome, and we host events related to each of them!
Can I get help with Maths and/or Physics related coursework?
For anyone looking for help with their coursework we recommend going to the Maths Support Centre or tutorials and other department organised supports. The society does have a regular study group session on Fridays at 2PM in Arts Classhall D, and you are more than welcome to come along to work on coursework either by yourself or in a group.
Do I have to study Maths and/or Physics to be part of the society?
Nope, anyone with an interest is welcome!
What does the Maths and Physics society do?
We are a group of maths and physics students that meet up regularly and run some events. Our usual meet up is Wednesday evening in Classhall E which often includes puzzles, problems and pizza. We also have a separate meet up on Friday afternoons which is more aimed as a quiet study group session. And of course, we have larger events throughout the year such as interesting talks and fun table quizzes.

Location: Art Classhall B

"Long Ago Division: How to Read Historical Maths Historically" is a virtual talk we'll be watching together as a society this Wednesday.

Taking a close look at how long division was presented in the first widely-used English-language arithmetic textbook, we will discuss what it means to read historical mathematics historically.

The Ground of Arts (1543) contained milestone expositions of what would become many standard set-pieces of basic mathematical education in the centuries to come, but beneath these familiar techniques there are important historical differences and lessons for us to examine.

Considerations will include how to relate historical contexts to the mathematical text, how to identify and interpret information about authorship and audiences, how to use our technical knowledge of mathematics to understand past techniques, and how to identify where and how past assumptions and understandings differ from our own.

About Maths & Physics Society

Open to anyone with an interest in mathematics or physics. You don't have to be into both, anyone into maths but not physics, or physics but not maths, is welcome!

There's also no requirement to study maths or physics, so if you're interested in either but don't study them, you're still very welcome to come down.

We have weekly study sessions on Fridays, and weekly meetups on Wednesdays, where you can take part in the different events put on by the committee, attempt the questions given by our problem setter, or just meet like-minded maths/physics fans. (And yes, there is often pizza.)

We host academic talks regularly, along with events in collaboration with other societies and sometimes even a society trip.

If you're interested in keeping up with our events, you can join our Discord, follow us on Instagram, check out our website at mathsphys.ie, or sign up for weekly emails here on MULife.

Thanks for checking us out, and we hope to see you at one of our events!
