Welcome to December!

Hello fellow Geography lovers!
Here's hoping you just had a wonderful weekend, and are ready to hear all about the week of events we here at the Geography Society have planned for you:

First of all, our Postgraduate Roadshow! This will be taking place this Tuesday December 6th, from 1-2PM, in Roque Lab (in Rhetoric House). This is being facilitated by the Geography Dept., and is a chance to find out all about your postgraduate opportunities with the Geography Dept., and get any burning questions you might have about postgraduate degrees answered. It's open for everyone to attend - if you have any questions about the event just shoot us an email at geography@nuimsu.com

On Wednesday, we're going to be hosting another  film screening, this time in collaboration with International Society! It's going on from 6- PM in TH1, and the film is still yet to be decided, but will have a Christmas Theme- we'll be announcing it at some point on the Facebook event page though (click here!) If you have a few free hours on Wednesday evening, why not come along and spend it with us? :)

Inline image 1

Our final event this week will be a collaboration with a number of other societies- Law, Business, Media, and Mental Health Societies, along with ourselves here at Geography, will be holding a photoshoot in the Arts Block from 10AM-5PM on Thursday, in which we want to ask students to sign a postcard / petition and have their picture taken demanding the release of Ibrahim Halawa, an Irish student who was arrested by Egyptian authorities for taking part in a peaceful protest three years ago. This is an important issue, and we urge all of our society members to come to the stand and help raise awareness of his situation.

On a final note, I'd like to make sure everyone knows what decisions were made at the EGM last week:
Our new Secretary, Bob Tysall (that'd be me) was elected. Our PRO position was split into 2 roles, poster and social media, which are now filled by Emily Purtell and Megan Oglesby respectively. The position of Meet and Greet officer was formalised, and Aran Kelly will continue in the role. Finally, two new members were added to our events team, Christopher Brogan and Aisling Meaney. Our congrats to all who were elected, and our thanks to all who made the EGM such a success :)

And that's all we have for the week! Hope you've enjoyed the email, I'll provide a summary underneath this, and I look forward to many emails to come.

Bob.

tl;dr:
Postgraduate Roadshow, Tuesday December 6th, 1-2PM, Roque Lab - info on postgrad opportunities.
Film screening, Wednesday December 7th, 6-9PM, TH1, film TBA.
Postcard signing & photographed protest for Ibrahim Halawa, Thursday December 8th, 10AM-5PM, Arts Block.

EGM decisions from last week above.

Hi all, hope everything is going well for you geography fans.

It's a big week for the Geography Society as we will welcoming some new people to the team on Tuesday evening.

We have an EGM at 6pm in JH7, if you would like to join our vibrant team come along and put yourself forward for one of the positions.
We are looking for:
a new Social Media PRO,
a new Poster PRO
and a new secretary.
We will provide training as required. We always have spaces in the events team also if you want to be involved but don't see yourself in one of the roles listed above.
We will be officially adding these positions to the constitution also as long as the members (you) vote it in :) We do need 2/3s of the members present to amend the constitution so we really need you to come along and vote. For your trouble we will provide pizza!

?

And at the earlier time of 4pm until 6pm, we will be screening an amazing film, but we won't know which film until 3pm tomorrow.... we want you to vote!

Its Malcolm X vs. Bloody Sunday (Malcolm X is currently in the lead by two votes but its early yet, it could go either way!). You don't need to be geography student or a society member to attend so if you have friends interested in the screening OR the EGM please bring them along or let them know they are more than welcome to come :) The more the merrier. To cast your vote click on the following link which will bring you to our poll on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/103240050165794/permalink/103246550165144/

We will be holding some peer support events on the run up to the break so if you're feeling overwhelmed by the work load please come along. We're all in this together! We will have people from each year in attendance so there will be someone you can chat to about the assignments you're doing, or the exams you'll be preparing for.

We look forward to seeing you at some of upcoming events. If you need to prioritize what you go to and can only do one Geography Society event, please make it the EGM, its where the most important stuff happens, including pizza!

Now the one thing that has really been lacking here are geography puns, so we'll end on one. Have a gneiss week!

All the best,

Geog Soc :)

Geog news week 8!

Posted 20th Nov 2016
Author Geog Soc

Hey Guys,

hope you are all settling into the second part of the semester. Believe it or not we have only four short weeks til we have a break again, I don't know about you guys, but I find the year is flying by!

?Soooo... what have we got for you this week I hear you ask???
Well on Wednesday we have a fundraising bake sale with all proceeds raised going to St. Raphael's School in Celbridge, which is the college charity of the year.
So try to make it to the Arts Block between 10-5pm on Wednesday and support a great cause while eating some yummy baked goods :)

We're a bit early telling you about this next one but we'd like to give you time to think about it and ask any questions you may have.
On Tuesday 29th November we are holding an EGM as we are looking for some excellent people to join our vibrant committee. Due to the success of the society and the workload of some committee members, we are looking to expand. We have roles in PRO - both social media PRO and poster PRO (training WILL be provided).
Due to some restructuring in the committee we are also looking for a secretary.
This is a great opportunity to get involved in a society that is already on its feet and running successfully. It is this type of involvement that changes the college experience for so many people (for the better), while also getting your CV to the top of the pile when it comes to the big bad real world in a year / few!
So have a think about it, if you have any questions please ask one of the committee members, if you don't know any of us personally you can message the facebook page (www.facebook.com/mugeogsoc/) or the twitter page (www.twitter.com/MUGeogSoc). There is no question too big or small, if one of us can't answer it we will pass it along to another person who can.
Come join our team, we'd love to have you on board :)

That's all for this week,
Geog Soc.

TY students, maps and parks

Posted 18th Nov 2016
Author Geog Soc

The Geography Society were delighted to help welcome some TY students to the Geography Department on Tuesday this week as part of Geoweek. Geoweek is an annual week dedicated to an element of geography which changes every year. This year the focus was on 'The power of the park'.

The students had a talk from Dr. Kevin Keegan on the local parks, their history and significance. We talked to them about our involvement in last year's happy campus, and the importance of finding a good space for mental health and well being. Neasa Hogan of the Geography Department talked to them about the Roque Maps, which are on display in Rhetoric House and are seriously impressive (check them out). Then they went for a walk to explore the grounds of the campus.

If you haven't done this yourself, please do. We are so lucky to have such green space on campus, many colleges and universities in Ireland don't have what we have.

Perfect way to take a break from all the study :)

All the best,

Geog Soc.

Hey folks,

FILM SCREENING: this week in the land of all things geography we have the amazing Joe Lee appearing in the third year's City In Film class, to honour that we are showing two of his award winning documentaries on Tuesday night, 6pm TH1 in the Arts building.

MILIEU! (bless you, I hear you say) ;) Milieu is the geography journal made by students and staff for all. We are looking for your submissions! 1000 word (approx.) pieces that are in some way geography related (remember, geography is the intersection of humans and places so that literally leaves it open to ANYTHING!!). If you have some work that you are happy with and its close to 1000 words (we are aware that a lot of assignments come in the 1500 word category so no worries if you can't cut it down), then please submit it to us. We will happily take in photo submissions also. If you have been to some place with your club / society / class / family and you thought it was particularly beautiful, and geographical, then why not send them in? The journal will be published in spring 2017. Anything that gets published in Milieu is considered a proper publication, so if you are looking to go further in your academic career this is one step forward.

So what else is going on in the world of geography? Well...

FOE IRELAND: Friends of the Earth Ireland are asking people to email their TDs asking them to meet in Buswell's hotel to discuss climate action. It takes about 2mins to email your TDs (they have it all set up nice and neat), and then you pick an hour slot to go meet your TDs on Tuesday. Friends of the Earth can fill you in on what to say if you want to take action but are nervous about what to say.

GEOG SEMINAR: The geography department have yet another interesting seminar on Thursday 4-5.30pm in Roque Lab: Benjamin Thebaudeau, Postdoctoral Researcher in the Irish Climate Analysis and Research Unit, Maynooth University. Talk title: “Mapping the Porcupine Bank and reconstructing its past.”

BAKE SALE: We plan on holding a fundraising bake sale next week so if you fancy yourself as a budding Mary Berry or Paul Hollywood, why not bake up a few goodies and help raise some worthy funds for St. Raphael's School in Celbridge. Bake sale takes place on 23rd Nov.

BOUNCEATHON: Plus, trampoline soc are having an amazing bounceathon on Tuesday 15th, if you fancy representing Geog soc and bounce the night away, or a little while anyway, please get in touch! Or just pop down to the event and tell the guys you'd like to bounce for geography!

SAFETALK: Safetalk is happening again this week, this is an amazing half day course that skills you up on practicalities of dealing with a situation where somebody feels suicidal, sounds heavy, but I promise, it is really good, hugely important and very practical. If you want to get involved please contact MHS or Karen in the Welfare Office in the SU.

Keep it real folks and have a gneiss day :)

Whale hello Geography Fans!

Welcome back to the final half of the first semester. You are officially ¼ of the way through your academic year, well done you :)

And remember, it’s GUST week on campus this week so if you haven’t ‘Gotten Ur Stuff Together’ yet there’s still time!

We have a few things planned to help ease you in to things…

We will be joining Chris in the pastoral care hour to talk to people about what we do in the society, if that’s not enough to make you break down the Student Services Door at 1pm (it’s in an Tobar in Student Services from 1-2pm), then perhaps the free tea, coffee and refreshments can convince you. Come along, I promise we’ll have fun :)

On Wednesday evening, we are screening The Hours at 6pm in TH1 in the Arts Block. This will be particularly beneficial to anyone doing GY339 as it is the film focussed on this week but we’d love to see as many of your friendly faces as possible thereJ Bring your mates and relax, everyone welcome along. This is a freebie event as well, perfect for midweek ;)

Plus, if you’re into eskers (who isn’t?!), then the Geography Department, as part of their seminar series have a talk on in Rocque Lab on Thursday at 4-5.30pm. Cathy Delaney, Senior Lecturer in the Division of Geography & Environmental Management from Manchester Metropolitan University will be talking on: “What do eskers tell us about ice sheets?”

So that’s all for this week folks, we hope to see you at some of the events :)
