Title: ‘Homer or Plato: The complete, genuine antagonism’? — The pragmatisms of Nietzsche and Whitehead

Speaker: Dr William Desmond

Bio: William Desmond is originally from Cork but was educated mainly in the US. His research focusses on intellectual history, particularly in the Greek Classical period and modern receptions of antiquity. His more recent publications include two monographs, Hegel’s Antiquity (Oxford, 2020) and Ancient Greece in 30 Hours (Amazon, 2024).

Abstract: Both Nietzsche and Whitehead take Homer and Plato as symbols of two opposite modes of thinking and being. This talk will present and comment on their parallel efforts to subsume the Platonic tradition to their varieties of pragmatism.
