The fifth lecture in our lecture series!

Title: Underdetermination in Machine Learning and AI

Going beyond the now well-known epistemic opacity problem for black-box algorithms, there is a further problem that has been mentioned more sparsely in the literature on machine learning, which I identify as arising from a form of underdetermination. I show that underdetermination presents a stark difficulty for the explainability of machine learning algorithms, and hence for their ethical use.

Dr Keith Begley

Keith Begley is an Honorary Associate in the Department of Philosophy, Durham University, and a Senior Postdoctoral Researcher in the School of Law and Criminology, Maynooth University. He was formerly an Assistant Lecturer in Philosophy at Maynooth (2021/22). He does research on Philosophy of AI, Philosophy of Language and Linguistics, History of Philosophy, and Computational Philology. He is currently a Doctoral student in the School of Computer Science and Statistics, Trinity College Dublin.
