IN-PERSON Activity |

Location: Tsi028 Ground Floor TSI BuildingAs of the 2023/24 academic year, we are introducing beginner lessons and general theory. This activity will have a specific focus for each type of player so there's no need to feel left out if you're already an advanced player or familiar with the game! Chess can be a tricky game to get into for many, but with this new weekly activity, hopefully it can build a confident and well-versed community of chess players around the university and further beyond! From how chess works, puzzles and strategy, and even to openings and endgame techniques, we hope this can help all players improve and enjoy the complex yet widespread game! Chess has proven to be an evergreen game throughout centuries. We hope this can make all feel more comfortable with the game that looks complicated at first, but proves to be ever-so satisfying once delved into. This activity is scheduled for Tuesday evenings from 6pm to 8pm in TSI028. We hope to see you there! |

Welcome to the Maynooth Chess Club!
Everyone fell in love with The Queen’s Gambit on Netflix during lockdown. Since then, there has been an explosion of chess content, online games have skyrocketed, there are chess streamers on Twitch with tens of thousands of viewers and all because people discovered a very well kept secret:
You don’t have to be a genius to play chess. You don’t have to be a grandmaster. You don’t even have to know all the rules! As intimidating as it can seem, chess is a game for everyone, and as José Capablanca said: “You will have to lose hundreds of games before becoming a good player.” (Luckily 3 minute blitz games go by quickly…)
This year will be jam-packed with blitz nights, beginner lessons, opening tutorials, and much more. Commuters fear not, if you can’t make some of our over-the-board events we will be hosting plenty of online tourneys and friendly matches.
It doesn’t matter if you’re a child prodigy going for grandmaster, or if you just want to beat your dad. You are more than welcome to the Maynooth Chess Club, we can’t wait to see you over the board!
