Original Song Contest is where Music Soc members, and music enthusiasts of Maynooth can come watch musicians perform their own original music. 2 judges will be present to pick 3 winners, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. The awards are a 100e, 50e or 25e gift card. Performers are required to sign up via a Forms link in our Instagram bio. 

Maynooth University’s Jazz & Blues Band will be performing a charity gig in Brady’s pub on Tuesday the 12th of April.

We will be holding a raffle where all funds raised will go to Bone Marrow for Leukaemia Trust. 

Formal attire is encourage but not required!

Busking open mic happening on Wednesday, December 1st from 2-5pm!

It will be taking place at the Phoenix Building Bandstand!

Amps will be provided but make sure to bring along your instruments!

It will be at 7pm and all you have to do is download teleparty to chrome and the link will be provided that night!

The theme is craic and ceol and the event is in collaboration with cuallacht na gaeilge for Seachtain na Gaeilge happening from the 8th-12th!

We are asking anyone who is interested in participating to submit a video of themselves singing/playing a song by an Irish Artist whether it be a pop song (Niall Horan, The Coronas, etc) or Irish Traditional Song (Fields of Athenry, Black is the Colour, etc). This event is also open to any Musicians/Instrumentalist who may wish to enter.

Submission's are closed on the 5th of March.

Voting is from the 8th to the 10th of March at 5pm

with the winners being announced live at 8pm on Wednesday the 10th of March.

There are prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place and we are really excited to hear everybody's entries to this competition.

New Music Society Logo Competition!

We are accepting submissions for a new Society Logo, it must be of a similar size to our current logo and clearly display the words 'MU Music Society'. The prize for this is a hoodie with an embroidery of your logo! Submit your design to the Google Drive link in our Link tree on our Instagram!

Original Song Contest

The Original Song Contest is our main event of Music Week 2020. It will take place from Monday the 7th to Thursday the 10th with a livestream to reveal our winners on Friday the 11th. Voting for this competition will take place online via polls for people who have entered to share to vote for their song to win. Make sure to submit your songs to music@mulife.ie before the 4th of December.

Music Week 2020 Semester 1!

This year we will be holding a virtual music week with a combination of events such as an original song contest, a charity quiz and a music themed Netflix watch party movie night! The event will run from the 7th to the 11th of December and the details of further events will be posted soon!

Music Week's Charity Quiz!

The music society will be holding a music themed quiz on the third day of music week in aid of MS Ireland. Given that this week is also the Student Unions charity week, it would mean the world to us if you could partake in this quiz by donating €2.00 to our Paypal in our bio on Instagram to join the quiz and be in with a chance to win a €50.00 OneForAll voucher!!

All you have to do to be in for the opportunity to win the prize is donate your €2.00 and DM us on Instagram with your name so we can add you to the quiz 'Microsoft Teams' chat!!

The quiz will be hosted over teams at 7pm and will contain 6 rounds; Jazz, Classical, Trad, Pop, Rock and Hip-hop! Music Week Netflix Watch Party!

The event that will be held on the second day of our semester one music week will be a Netflix watch party through the software "Teleparty" of the film La La Land. We will be gathering online that evening to watch the fantastic movie focusing on the world of fame, love and most importantly; Jazz. To join all you have to do is follow these three simple steps:

Collaborative Feel-Good Playlist

For the month of November, we are collaborating with the Mental Health Society to promote awareness and raise money for mental health.

We have decided to create a 'Feel Good' playlist for people who may be struggling with their mental health and we are asking members of the society to contact us (Instagram, Facebook, Email) with song suggestions over the course of the month with songs or instrumental music they feel puts them in a good mood or have helped them with their own mental health. there will be more info about this on our social media over the next few days.

Open Mic Online Submissions: Movember Awareness (In collaboration with Mental Health Society)

We have come up with an idea to promote the submissions of music whether it be covers, originals or instrumental on our instagram IGTV and our brand new youtube channel! This event will change up on a monthly basis, and each month we will offer a different theme to give a little direction to anyone who wants to get involved. So how would this work?!

- Step 1: Check out our instagram for our prescribed monthly theme!

- Step 2: Get creative!! Put together an audio or video file with the theme in mind of you performing in any musical format you desire!

- Step 3: Contact our instagram, facebook or simply reply to this email with what you have come up with which we can then upload to our brand new society youtube channel and our IGTV.

After everything is uploaded every Friday we will be promoting all of the links from our submissions from that week. The theme for this month is Mental Health Awareness which we are collaborating with the Mental Health Society on. What this theme means; is any tune you have that means something to you or helps you get through a tough day would be perfect to submit.

Ceolouring and Chill will take place in Your Space with Mental Health Society! Come chill have some tea, draw and listen to some music - starts at 2pm!

A week long with events everyday, collabs with other societies all taking place in the Student Union through out the week!!

Our amazing jazz and blues band are performing in the SU bar on Wednesday March 4th - its always a great night so don’t miss out!

We have another open mic/karaoke collab with the fab Musical Society March 3rd in the Venue starting at 9pm!

The fabulous Eamonn Walsh and Ben Cully return for another song writing workshop taking place in meeting room 3/4 in the SU!

Original Song Contest with guest judges Liam Óg Ó hOistín from Just Like Us, Paul Kenny, our VP for Clubs and Socs in the SU and Luz Corrigan, singer/songwriter who has been support act for Hudson Taylor, Little Hours, Plested, Wild Youth and soon to be support act of Rhys Lewis - she will also perform a few songs on the night!

Wednesday 27th

We are delighted to be collaborating with Mental Health Society and Arts, Crafts and Design Society for ‘Ceolouring and Chill’ Creative Coffee. It will take place in Your Space from 2-4PM. So come and chill, have some tea, colour and listen to some tunes!!!!!

That night, our Rock and Pop Band will perform in The Roost starting around 9:45PM!!

Thursday 28th

Finally, our Lunchtime Concert will be with Harpist Laoise Kelly from Mayo in Riverstown Hall at 1:10PM!

We will be having a Music Tech Workshop with Shane Dunleavy, where he will be showing how to run a PC, spool cables, the lot!! So make sure to come down for a very informative evening taking place in Riverstown Hall at 7PM!

A karaoke night collaboration with musical society in the SU Venue, singing all the best musical songs!

3 Metal Bands, Holocene Extinction, Following the Signs and Death Can Wait are holding a Metal Night in the SU Venue! A night not to be missed!

Rock and Pop Band Showcase is an event that will showcase rock and pop talent in the university. Performances from Dunluvly, Kadir, Adam Fenlon, Sam Lee and Rock and Pop Band on the night.

This is the Music Societies annual general meeting! We will be looking for new committee members and will also be have some refreshments and pizza on the night. It's also followed by our first Jazz and Blues gig of the year in Upstairs of Brady's afterwards

Come join Music Soc afer an eventful semester for their annual Chirstmas Party upstairs in Brady's. It promises to be an excellent night of live music from the Society's bands and special performances from other too!

Join the Music Society with estemeed jazz teacher David Mooney for a workshop in how to improvise, and many other finer points of playing jazz. 

Come down to hear the wise words from Music Soc's very own Maestro Jeff Moore.

Jeff will be giving an in-depth, practical talk about home recording, featuring many tips and tricks that'll help better your own home studio work.

We hope to see you there for this great learning experience.

We are holding our (now) annual Christmas Party on next Tuesday the 5th of December in the upstairs part of Brady's. It will be a gig/open mic/jam session. It's FREE in!

So come hang out with us! Anyone is welcome, the Jazz Band will be playing some tunes also we will open the floor to any song suggestions or if anyone wants to get up and sing/play and let others join in, it is completely open.

MU MUSIC SOCIETY will be hosting an ORIGINAL SONG CONTEST in aid of this years MSU charity choice JIGSAW, on Tuesday the 28th of November at 8:30 in THE ROOST. It's free admission and it costs 5 euro to enter the competition and 1 euro to vote. There will also be a panel of judges who decide the winner along with the crowd! 

NO COPYCATS! Songs must be original to the acts performing them. If you are caught plagiarising music you will be disqualified with no refund. 

There will be some fantastic prizes including 2 hours of recording time on campus and there will also be a prize for the act with the highest audiences vote.

We are hosting a original song workshop for all you budding songwriters. This will be brought to you by a previous MU Music Society president, Chris Redmond. 

Chris is currently teaching in the Maynooth Music Academy and he is also a working musician with his band Ivy Bloom. Check them out! 

Chris will be going through some basic ways to start songwriting and coming up with ideas and tunes. This is a free workshop and we hope you can make it!! The location will be confirmed closer to the date. 

This then will tie into our Original Song Contest, which will be on on the 7th of November, the first Tuesday back after the mid-term. The contest will be great fun and yet again Chris Redmond has agreed to be a judge for this event. There will also be great prizes to be won.

Haydn string quartet Op.74 No.3 (4th movement)
