As you may be aware one of MU FLACs big projects this academic year is our new Peer Mentorship Programme. We have decided it is now the right time for you to meet your Mentor or Mentee. What better way than our new mingle event!

We invite all Mentors and Mentees to attend our mingle event which includes a fun interactive Table Quiz. On the night, we will have a prize of 2 vouchers for Camille Thai for 1st place team so bring your winning quiz attitude with you :).

This Wednesday the 8th at 6:30pm we are hosting a panel discussion in collaboration with the Law and Technology society on the gender pay gap in Ireland. Dr Fergus Ryan will be moderating a discussion highlighting recent legal developments and the career journeys of our panelists. Anne O'Connell from Anne O'Connell Solicitors, an award winning law firm in Ireland and Deirdre Lynch who is a partner at Pinsent Masons will be joining us.

As part of the Social Justice Week , we will be hosting a debate in collaboration with @muliterarydebating and @elsamaynooth .The debate question is “this house agrees that a right to housing should be a constitutional right “. It will be on Tuesday the 7th of March 2023 in JHL7 in John Hume building.

We are excited to announce our event "Pro Bono Opportunities in Arthur Cox" with Carolann Minnock and Cliodhna Joyce Daly making a presentation. This is happening in JHL4 at 6:30pm Wednesday the 15th February. This will be a very interesting event, and is a great opportunity to learn about the importance of Pro Bono work and opportunities in this area.

Debt Insolvency Training Session with Conor Duff BL. This event will take place online at 6:30pm via zoom 

In spirit of Pro Bono Week, PILA (Public Interest Law Alliance) coordinates the Pro Bono Pledge, which was set up by legal practionners to encourage and provide Pro Bono work across Ireland. We will be having Éamonn Conlon SC on Thursday, the 24th of November at 6:30pm to speak about the pledge. We encourage everyone to log on and participate on Thursday, as it will be a very interesting discussion.

We are delighted to announce that we are running a Shoebox Appeal with Team Hope this November and will be having a presentation and collection of these shoeboxes Tuesday the 15th of November in JHL4 at 6:30PM. There will be a representative from Team Hope on the night to discuss the importance of these shoeboxes. We as a society are proud to support such an amazing cause. We here at MU FLAC are delighted to announce the 3rd Annual Johanna Airey Moot Court Competition, which will take on Saturday 22nd October 2022.

Applications close on on Thursday 20 October 2022. To register for the competition, email your names and details to thejohannaaireymoot@gmail.com.Written submissions will be due on Thursday 20th October 2022.
We look forward to continuing the success of last year’s competition! We highly encourage everyone, including new mooters to participate in this event. It’s a great opportunity for one to develop their research, critical thinking and public speaking skills, all of which are fundamental aspects of a career in law.

We will be hosting a Moot Court Workshop alongside the Law Society this Thursday the 13th of October in JHL4 at 6pm. This workshop will be beneficial for both novice and experienced mooters as we have numerous guest speakers to give their own insights and tricks. We hope to see everyone there!

MU FLAC’s Annual General Meeting will take place next Tuesday April 26 at 6pm. This will be a hybrid event, both taking place online and on campus in CB1. This year, we have combined our AGM with @elsamaynooth.

Both AGM’s will take place on the same evening, one after the other. There are many exciting positions for next year within the Flac Society! We will also have a discussion on our events and collaborations throughout the year, and how it has been an overall fantastic year. We highly encourage everyone to come along to our AGM to run for a chance to be on next year’s committee! This is a great opportunity to receive top tips on how a legal consultation is carried out, and will give students valuable information and an insight before entering into legal training. Dr. Clíodhna Murphy will present a discussion on Contemporary Issues in Migration and Human Rights. This event will take place this Tuesday in CB1 at 6pm. We hope to see you all there!

Kicking off Social Justice Week, we have an exiting collab with Maynooth's Literary and Debating society. The event will take place this Monday at 6:10pm in JHL2.The debate - “this house believes that human rights are only inherent to citizens of developed countries”.We highly encourage all of our members to attend this event. Even though it’s a bit of fun, it is a great opportunity to showcase public speaking and critical thinking skills.

We are holding a panel discussion on ‘Gender and the Law’ this Wednesday March 9th between 3 and 4pm.

The discussion will be presented by Dr. Sinead Ring, who will discuss her work in this field. She will be joined by Dr. David Doyle, who will talk about SPUR opportunities in this area.This event will be held on zoom - login details will be sent to members via email.

This session will be presented by Prof Michael Doherty and will explore recent trends and issues within the employment law sector. The AGM this year will be held in person but due to the university’s health guidance, there will only be 50 persons permitted to attend in person. However, we will be providing a live stream service via Zoom for those who can't attend. 

There will be two positions up for grabs, an events officer and our first year representative , two central parts of the committee!  We urge those who wish to run for these positions to attend in person , to give you the best shot possible for election.

We are hosting a combined event with the Literary and Debating Society on Tuesday, March 23 at 7pm. The debate will be “This House, as the US, regrets the reintroduction of the death penalty”. The debate will be judged by Dr. Amina Adanan.

Continuing with our events for Social Justice Week, Gerard Maguire will talk about the evolution of Human Rights protections in Ireland. This event will take place over zoom.

Lit&Deb x FLAC: Next week is Social Justice Week here at Maynooth University, so we have teamed up with Lit&Deb to bring you... 'This House Would Provide Free Accommodation to All Students' The Irish General Election 2020 was truly dominated by the issue of housing and homelessness. We will have a Special Guest JUDGE for this debate: Professor Amina Adanan from the Department of Law, Maynooth University.

Proffessor David Mangan will train our members in giving legal advice in the area of Employment Law.

Dr. Amina Adanan is giving a talk to our members on the areas of Landlord and Tenant Law that will be relevant in our clinics.

This Wednesday (22nd March) there will be a Free Legal Advice Clinic taking place in the Iontas Seminar Rooms from 7-8pm. These clinics are free and completely confidential, so if you have any legal questions or queries our trained advisors in conjunction with soicitors and barristers will be happy to help.

The final FLAC training session will take place Wednesday 1st March, with practical tips for advising at the clinics and mock scenarios to introduce you to how a FLAC clinic works.

We are happy to announce that we again be entering Maynooth teams in the FLAC Intervarsity Moot Court Competition; we will be running the Maynooth internal competition to enter this Competition on the 6th December. A worthwhile opportunity for all 'Mooters' to compete on a National level; hope you can participate.

Dr. Neil Maddox will be holding a training seesion for FLAC trainees dealing with the topic of Landlord & Tenant Law.

THe F.L.A.C Training will commence on Monday 28th November, with Susan Webster providing a detailed lecture on the family law related issues often encountered in F.L.A.C clinics. For those who wish to become qualified F.L.A.C members, attendance is compulsory, and anyone who wishes to sign up to the society can do so on the night.

The Free Legal Aid Centre are offering a clinic for those who may be experiencing issues with the law. There will be a qualified solicitor on hand to offer advise to participants. Clinics are completely free and completely confidential. 

Come along and meet thecommittee as we discuss our plans for the year. Free food and drinks will be provided, and we will be signing up new members at the end of the AGM.

Come along to Iontas Seminar Room on the 1st of May at 6:30 p.m. if you have any legal issues you need advice on, everything free of charge! We'll be available to assist on topics such as Employment Law, Landlord & Tenant Law, Public Order Offences and some areas of Criminal Law.
