Come join us on Monday 21st October 2024 at 5:30pm in the TSI Building - Lecture Theatre 3 in Maynooth University for a special lecture by Dr. Brian Pennie. RTÉ filming crew will be present at this event which will be included in a 3-part documentary series titled The Science of Addiction, airing in March 2025. 

Change is Possible: Maynooth University graduate Brian Pennie overcame heroin addiction and obtained a PhD in Neuroscience. Brian will provide a unique insight into the neuroscience of trauma and addiction. He will also outline how we can rewire our brains into recovery - with a focus on gratitude and human connection. This special lecture will be followed by a Q&A session. 

Attendees are required to arrive by 5:15pm to allow for a 5:30pm start.

Please note: This event will be filmed for inclusion in an RTÉ series pertaining to addiction.

Join us for a Halloween-themed talk provided by Prof. Richard Roche on the topic of Parapsychology! This will be an fun evening for Psych Soc members who have an interest in paranormal phenomena. 

There will be pizza and refreshments after!

We are hosting a talk presented by Dr. Tadhg MacIntyre & Dr. Siobhán Woods. They will be discussing opportunities in sports, exercise and environmental psychology. 

This event will take place in JHL 4 on Tuesday 19th March at 5pm.

MU Psych Soc are taking a trip to the All-Ireland Psychology Careers Fair! 

This event will take place at UCD on March 2nd from 9am - 3:15pm. Want to join Psych Soc? We are offering to cover the cost of the bus for Psych Soc members for the benefit of all of us in the society - it will be a fun and informative day out. We may even learn about a career path we hadn't even considered!

To avail of the hired bus, we will require students to send a fully-refundable deposit of €10 via Revolut to our Treasurer: @aoifemcg05

When sending money via Revolut, it is important for you to list your full name and student number so we can refund you the money back on Revolut and to keep a checklist of members on the bus. Full refunds will be issued to members upon return to Maynooth University. This is to ensure there is genuine interest in students availing of a hired bus, because it is a significant cost to the society's budget. 

Please note, there will be a first-come first-served basis because the bus will hold 20 passengers. Students would need to arrive at the bus depot opposite the Phoenix building in MU for 8:00am sharp (on a Saturday?! - I know, sorry!). This is to ensure we are there for the start at 9am in UCD). On return, the bus will leave UCD at 3:30pm sharp.

Psych Soc is collaborating with the Mental Health soc, Cancer soc, Bio-Med soc, Lego soc and Games soc for a charity quiz in aid of Movember. Tickets are three euro and are available for purchase in the students union, where the quiz will be held from 7 pm until 9 pm tonight, Thursday the 23rd. There are prizes to be won and all proceeds will be going to charity :))

The Psychology society will be joined by Professor Philip Hyland in CB1 from 5 pm to 6 pm on Thursday evening. Professor Hyland will be answering a variety of questions from the society about the field of Psychology.

The psychology society will be hosting a study session in the John Hume computer lab on Thursday from 2 pm to 3 pm. 

On Wednesday, The Psychology soc and the Enviro soc will be collaborating and showing a film showcasing a case study of climate change anxiety - Greta Thunberg ('I am Greta'). The film will be shown in JHL3 from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. 

Psychology Society will be hosting our AGM for the college term of 2023-24, we have many empty positions on the committee which we hope to fill. We look forward to meeting lots of our societies new and old members on the day of this exciting event !

Next week Wednesday we have an Irish Organisation that specialises in advocating for human rights in mental health @mhreform joining us to give a talk about who they are and how to get involved with them ?. They will be giving a talk about their policies and their advocacy. They can be seen as potential future employers for Psych students interested in mental health advocacy and will discuss how we can get involved with them !

The talk will be on Wed the 5th of April from 5pm until 5.45pm in JH Lecture theatre 3.
This will be in collaboration with @mhsmaynooth ?.

We're hosting a Christmas-themed movie night on Monday, the 5th of December, at 6 p.m. in John Hume Lecture Theatre 2 in collaboration with the Anthropology, Politics & Sociology, and Biology Societies in order to fundraise for the -ology Ball being planned for March. There will be a 'guess the number of x in the jar' on the side, where 2 euros will be charged per guess, and all proceeds will go towards the ball. Store-bought snacks will be provided at the movie night, and a poll will be put up on our Instagram page where the movie with the highest votes will be played ! There will be prizes offered to those who guess nearest to the actual number :)

Dr. Philip Hyland is going to give, a sure to be interesting, talk based on his recent publication 'State of Ireland's mental health: findings from a nationally representative survey'. This talk will discuss mental health in relation to a study that he conducted recently, the findnings of this study included that 42.5% of the sample met the criteria for a mental health disorder. This is part of our Movember campaign and will be a great opportunity to gain knowledge on the current ins and outs of mental health within our population from a researcher in the field. The talk will take place in the Teaching Room in the Psychology Department (2nd Floor in the John Hume Building). This event is a collab with Mental Health Society. This online Clinical Psychology Panel will comprise speakers from various aspects of the clinical field. A broad range of speakers will talk about the experiences of a trainee psychologist in the field, the clinical doctorate itself, academia and research, and their experiences of working in practice. This event will give students an overview of clinical psychology as a career option; what they can expect from postgraduate studies in clinical psychology and what opportunities may arise from it. Time will also be allotted for students to ask any questions they might have in relation to clinical psychology.

We are hosting a table quiz in collaboration with other STEM societies such as Women in Stem, Engineering, Maths, Computer Science and more!

We are hosting a movie night where we will be showing the mini docu-series "The Mind Explained", which features short 20-minute episodes on the workings of the mind, such ax anxiety, and dreams among other topics. This is a great way to destress and not think about deadlines and exams for a while, whilst also getting to meet other members of the society. This is also the perfect occasion for pending members to pay their outstanding €2 membership fee.

Being part of the committee is a great way to get involved in the running of a society, and is a very rewarding experience all-round. After that, we'll briefly tell you about some of our plans for the year, and answer any questions that you might have. Then it's onto the highlight of the night: pizza and a movie!
