This is the Classics Society’s long awaited collaboration with Film Soc! We will be doing a screening of The Holdovers on Dec 4th to get everyone into the holiday spirit before the winter break!

The Holdovers is a film about a curmudgeonly classics instructor at a New England prep school, who remains on campus during Christmas break to babysit a handful of students with nowhere to go. He soon forms an unlikely bond with a brainy but damaged troublemaker, and with the school's head cook, a woman who just lost a son in the Vietnam War.

This film is perfect for people who need reminding that their Classics professors aren’t just old boring Homer fanatics, they’re also terrible babysitters!

This is the Classics Society’s Gladiator ll cinema trip! This is a chance for our members to take a well deserved break from their studies and relax while enjoying the highly anticipated sequel to the original Gladiator film. It is a private screening on Saturday the 23rd of November in the Savoy Cinema in Dublin City Centre! There are 20 spaces available to book, with a cost of €5 per person. With this €5 contribution, members will get a ticket for the film, a medium popcorn and a drink. 

There are two meeting points available:

- Maynooth Train Station at 12:25pm

-The Savoy Cinema on O’Connell Street at 1:40pm

This is the Classics Society’s game of ‘Secret Caesar’, a classical spin on the game ‘Werewolf’. In the middle of a stressful week, this is an opportunity to take a few hours to relax and have fun with other society members! 

This is the Classics Society's Powerpoint event!!! This is the chance for our members to showcase their classical knowledge through quick fun powerpoints!!! Your powerpoint can be funny or educational but must be kept to 5 mins or under out of respect for other members. If you want to do a powerpoint you must book your slot on the event, but you don't need to book if you are only planning on attending for fun. This the Classics Society Halloween Event!!! We will be hosting an Odyssey themed scavenger hunt, in which our members will follow the travels of the famed hero Odysseus and his quest to return to his homeland Ithaca!! Through a series of trails and riddles the members will journey throughout campus in an effort to return home to the Rye Building and end the night in a celebration of their adventures!!! dressing up is encouraged but not mandatory and food and drink will be provided at the end of the scavenger hunt. The Classics Society is collaborating with Publication and Literary Society to host a poetry night. There will be an introduction session on Sappho, one of the most renowned classical poets in history with poetry readings afterwards. 

Classics society is holding an Ides of March indoor picnic. There will be snacks and drinks supplied and a showing of some fun powerpoint presentations on what the Ides of March is.

Classics society is holding a movie night in collaboration with Film society. The movie that will be shown is Gladiator. The event is planned to start at 6:30pm and end around 9pm. 

Dr Kieran McGroarty of the Classics department in Maynooth University is giving a talk on ‘Black Market Babies and Athenian Civic Identity’  for the classics society on the 5th of December in JHL4 at 6pm. 

The Classics Society and Fashion Society of MU is holding a Crochet workshop On Wednesday 29th of November from 9am-11am. No matter what level of experience individuals have with crocheting, all are welcome ! Tea, Coffee, biscuits and cakes will be provided. 

Meg Carson, a masters student who was previously apart of Maynooths Classics Society is kindly hosting a beginners Latin Workshop on the 28th of November. The workshop will be held in JH7 and will start at 6pm. This workshop will cover the very basics of Latin, so no previous experience or knowledge of the language is required. 

Dr Carl O’Brien of Maynooth University’s Classics Department is giving a lecture on ‘Plato’s Unwritten Doctrines’ for the Classics Society. The event will take place in JHL3 on the 22nd of November at 6pm. 

The Classics Society is holding a Samhain/Halloween quiz on the 24th of October in John Hume Lecture Theatre 1. There will be prizes for the winners !

The Classics Society are holding their AGM ! This event will take place on the 17th of October from 6pm-8pm in John Hume Lecture Theatre 7. The positions of Secretary and First Year Rep will be elected. 

Movie night with the Ancient Classics Society ! We are showing Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief in John Hume Lecture room 6 from 6pm-8pm on the 5th of October. Pizza and fizzy drinks will be supplied to attendees before hand.

For our weekly Classics Society event this week we are hosting a Beginner's Ancient Greek Workshop Part 2! Last semester we hosted a Beginner's Ancient Greek Workshop, with Dr Kerry Phelan. However this workshop will be accessible for anyone in attendance. This will be taking place on Wednesday at 7pm in JHL 6. Our own Secretary Adam Molyneaux will be teaching the class and we are very excited for this. 

I hope you can all attend. Everyone is welcome and there are handouts that explain the Ancient Greek Alphabet and of Basic Grammar.

During our book club we want to hear what books you're reading currently reading/starting and what recommendations you have for all of us. No one is expected to be a bookworm so don't worry about not reading as much as you'd like, as we'll be taking up everyone's tips that help them read! Your book(s) don't have to be Classics orientated so no need to worry for not reading Sappho's Fragments or Ovid's The Metamorphoses in your own time. No one sane does that  to themselves!

'The Gory Elements of Greek Tragedy' presented by Maynooth Classics Society's special guest speaker, Derek McCann!

Maynooth University's very own, Derek McCann will be giving us a gruesomely vivid insight into the gory elements within Greek Tragedy! The talk will start at 7pm, 28th of Oct, 2020 on our MS Teams chat. We'll also be having our Halloween Costume Competition during the talk! All you have to do is to dress up as your favourite Greek/Roman Historical/Mythological figure! Points will be reserved for your creativity <3 The winner will be announced after Derek McCann's talk.
