Hello * FROM dataScienceSociety,

We've just returned from a wild trip to Dell's Innovation Labs in Limerick, and we thought it may be appropiate to share a recap for those who couldn't join us. The day was packed with state-of-the-art technology, enlightening discussions, and hands-on experiences. I think it's fair to say that we all left inspired.

Dell Innovation Labs

Our journey kicked off with a bus ride from Maynooth to Dell's customer solution center in Limerick. There, we were warmly greeted by Pat O'Duffy, Senior Consultant at Dell and our gracious host for the day. Pat began by sharing highlights from his career journey and some of the groundbreaking projects he's been involved with at Dell.

Innovation Lab Tour

The tour of the Innovation Lab was undoubtedly the highlight of our visit. Pat, who played a key role in establishing this pioneering facility in Limerick, guided us through an impressive array of technologies.

The lab was a showcase of Dell-enabled products: conveyor belts, robotic arms, and cameras of every description. We even had the chance to challenge (and lose to </3) a robotic arm in a game of tic-tac-toe.

Throughout the tour, Pat offered valuable insights into the data science aspects of these technologies, emphasizing how each solution collects and transforms data into actionable information.

We also had the pleasure of meeting Vishal Manuhar, a recent graduate of UL whose been with Dell for over two years now. Vishal showcased his work on data-driven healthcare solutions, including an AR experience that allowed us to interact with a virtual heart - both seeing and feeling it!

It's always good to see a recent graduate making significant contributions to such big projects. Hopefully soon current DSS members will get similar opportunities.

Limerick Office Tour

En route to lunch, we got a glimpse of the vast Limerick offices. Pat mentioned how the space, originally used for manufacturing. The Global Command Center was particularly impressive.

Computer Vision Deep Dive

Post-lunch, we returned to the Innovation Lab for a focused discussion on computer vision, one of Pat's areas of expertise. We delved into current technologies in this field, with a particular emphasis on public acceptance. Pat shared about how Dell supports ongoing research in Norway on this very topic.

Data Center Experience

Our visit concluded with a tour of the adjacent Data Center. The sheer scale and power of the facility were mind-blowing, despite the deafening noise levels! Pat showcased some of the most advanced hardware and introduced us to an alternative, fully submersive, liquid cooling system he's been developing.

A Day to Remember

We are filled with gratitude for this incredible experience. The trip provided us with invaluable insights into real-world applications of data science and advanced technology.

We at the DSS would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Pat O'Duffy for generously sharing his time, knowledge, and passion with us. He's an inspiration to young technical-minded fanatics who are excited by applying solutions to real world problems.

+We're also grateful to the clubs and socs office for helping us secure the bus.
