Featuring Dr. Gaven Kerr, this online  seminar will bring to the fore a detailed consideration of the moral and ethical implications related to the issue of euthanasia. In the present time, the Irish government is going through the stages of drafting a bill which might allow for euthanasia to be legally introduced into Ireland. This bill is being termed as 'Dying with Dignity'.
This seminar seeks to inform one of the relevant ethical implications and problems that are associated with euthanasia, and hence, the problems that the introduction of such a bill would entail for Irish culture.

Do the values of autonomy, dignity and compassion justify the legalisation of euthanasia, or has modern culture misunderstood these values in the first place? This talk will propose a renewed understanding of human freedom and other related concepts, in order to examine arguments for and against euthanasia. 

Michael Wee is the Education and Research Officer of the Anscombe Bioethics Centre, a Catholic research institute based in Oxford. He is also associate lecturer in bioethics at Oscott seminary in Birmingham, and is an Associate Member of the Aquinas Institute of Blackfriars Hall, Oxford.

The Existence of God

Abstract : This talk will explore a demonstration for God's existence offered by Thomas Aquinas in the early work De Ente Et Essentia. It will be argued that this demonstration is quite promising and worthy of contemporary consideration.

Our speaker: Dr Gaven Kerr O.P.

Dr Kerr is a lecturer in Philosophy at Maynooth University. He is from Belfast, Northern Ireland, and is married with two children. All of his philosophical studies were undertaken at Queen’s University Belfast. He obtained his BA there in 2004, then his MPhil under the supervision of James McEvoy in 2006, and the examination of Prof Thomas Kelly (Maynooth) and Mr Christopher McKnight (QUB). He obtained his PhD in 2011 under the supervision of James McEvoy (until his death in 2010), and the examination of Prof John Haldane (St Andrew’s) and Dr Michael Dunne (Maynooth). The title of his PhD thesis was: The Metaphysics of St Thomas Aquinas and Neo-Thomistic Realism. Outside of academia, Dr Kerr has a keen interest in health and fitness, martial arts (kung-fu), classical music and literature. He wrote Aquinas’ way to God (Oxford: OUP, 2015).
